PRO TIP Why Modern Databases Prefer UUID v7

RFC 9562 finalized UUID v7, which prefixes 48 bits of millisecond timestamp with 74 random bits. This preserves the decentralized generation of UUIDs while providing monotonic sort order, eliminating B-Tree indexing performance penalties.

Technical Guide & Overview

UUID (Universally Unique Identifier, RFC 4122) and GUIDs are 128-bit identifiers used to guarantee uniqueness across distributed systems without central coordination.

How It Works Under the Hood

Otuls utilizes the browser Cryptography API (window.crypto.getRandomValues) to generate cryptographically secure pseudo-random numbers (CSPRNG). Version 4 UUIDs set the 4-bit version field to 0100 (4) and the 2-bit variant field to 10 (RFC 4122 variant 1).

Authoritative Specifications & Primary Standards

Official specifications, RFCs, and authoritative open-source repositories for UUID Generator:

IETF RFC

The international standard defining Version 4 (random) and Version 1 (time-based) UUID algorithms.

Official Manual

International Telecommunication Union specification for global identifier uniqueness.

CLI Equivalents & Terminal Automation

Generate UUID v4 on Linux:
uuidgen -r
Generates random UUID using system entropy pool.
Generate UUID with Python:
python3 -c "import uuid; print(uuid.uuid4())"
Cross-platform one-liner for shell scripts.

Zero-Knowledge Client-Side Sandboxing

Generated strictly in-browser from your operating system hardware entropy pool.
